How to be in a Fandom: Part 2
Hi everyone, and today I'm going to try something new for this blog. Something humorous, which can help you find out something crucial to your identity. How to tell if you are in a fandom, and what to do now that you are part of the Fandom.
But firstly, for those not as Internet savvy: what is a Fandom? According to Wikipedia, it is:
A fandom is a subculture composed of fans characterized by a feeling of empathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest. Fans typically are interested in even minor details of the objects of their fandom and spend a significant portion of their time and energy involved with their interest, often as a part of a social network with particular practices, differentiating fandom-affiliated people from those with only a casual interest.
A fandom can grow around any area of human interest or activity. The subject of fan interest can be narrowly defined, focused on something like an individual celebrity, or encompassing entire hobbies, genres or fashions.
Which fandom am I part of? That is a question you, and only you, can answer. Hopefully, my list of guidelines on how to find out whether you are part of a particular Fandom will help. With each step, I shall include my own experience on how I found out my main Fandom and how I'm currently sustaining my love for it.
Also, be aware that each step will get its own post because it's a long process. Long, but worth it.
So, without any further ado, let's get started!
2.) CONSIDER HOW THE CONTENT MAKES YOU FEEL.
There are many factors affecting the fandom you are suspecting that you are part of. However, the main one is how it makes you feel. Not a random person, but YOU. Does having new content coming out excite you? When you talk to someone, are you bursting to talk about the particular subject? When revisiting the content already out, does it make you feel light inside and that nothing wrong can happen?
If you answered yes to all these questions, you are 100% in that Fandom.
My process to finding out I was a Potterhead pretty much went the same way. I was about 13 years old when the first Fantastic Beasts movie came out (just two years into the Fandom at the time). When I heard that we were getting new content from the Wizarding World, I was simply overjoyed and excited. I would not shut up about it and I was begging my dad to take me to watch the film. He was hesitant because I did not take well to "scary" things like fantasy films at the time (I had only read the books and watched the first few films at that point). However, the moment he actually decided to take me to watch this film (which I was obsessed about afterwards by the way) was the true moment that my love for the Harry Potter universe solidified into what it is today. I had realised that the content made me feel happy and light, I would not shut up about it once I found someone who mentioned it and it excited me as soon as new content was being released.
Hope you liked the second part of this series. Have a good day and happy hunting!
